Developing the Yorkshire economy

Yorkshire Universities creates development opportunities and network groups across all levels of higher education institutions; from specialist areas of marketing and knowledge transfer, to assisting senior higher education staff in developing their own teams’ skills and ambitions. New products are tested and evaluated and successful models and processes are rolled out to members and outside agencies to ensure continuity of best practice and that investments are maximised.

Current examples of projects include:

Yorkshire Universities Technical Assistance Project (TAP)
Yorkshire Universities (YU) is a delivery partner in two consortium technical assistance (TA) programmes; one in Leeds City Region (LCR) and one covering York North Yorkshire and East Riding (YNYER) and the Humber Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) areas. Through this mechanism YU supports strong collective engagement with the 2014-2020 European Structural and Investment Funds (ESIF) programme.

The YU TAP continues and extends work undertaken in the YUTA[1] project by incorporating a focus on opportunities in the ESF[2] programme (in addition to ERDF[3]). The inclusion of TA support for ESF is of particular benefit to the HE sector, where there has been a gap in expertise in recent years. The TAP will therefore support YU members to build capacity for engaging with and realising opportunities under ESF.

Working with members and wider stakeholders the TAP will support the development of projects and provide technical support across three LEP areas and foster links where appropriate with its members’ ESIF activities in Sheffield City Region. This collective HE TA resource will enable greater alignment of university research and technology strengths with ESIF priorities across multiple LEP areas, developing economies of scale that delivers maximum benefit for the regional economy.

Higher Education Local Enterprise Partnership project for business and economic development
This is a new collaboration between Yorkshire’s universities and the Leeds City Region and York & North Yorkshire Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs) to strengthen links between the universities, business and LEP infrastructure. The project is creating new approaches and opportunities for strengthening knowledge exchange between universities and businesses and for stimulating business-led innovation in Yorkshire

Study in Yorkshire smart phone app
Yorkshire Universities recently launched its new smart phone application – Study in Yorkshire - which promotes the benefits and advantages of studying in the region to international students. This was developed by Yorkshire Universities’ international marketing and student recruitment group with the aim of building a strong global location identity for Yorkshire to attract more overseas students to the region.
