Yorkshire Universities congratulates its members on their results in the English Social Mobility Index 2024, published by the Higher Education Policy Institute and compiled by London South Bank University.
The English Social Mobility Index measures the social distance travelled by socio-economically disadvantaged graduates from each higher education institution in England as well as the proportion of graduates so transported. The index highlights the impact that higher education institutes across England can have on students’ lives.
It is promising to see numerous institutions from the Yorkshire & Humber region placing in the top 100, with the University of Bradford ranking number one and the University of Huddersfield securing a place in the top ten. It is evident that YU’s diverse membership are essential actors in improving social mobility and provide transformative opportunities for individuals across the region.
The webinar launch of the Index was chaired by HEPI Director of Policy and Advocacy, Rose Stephenson, on 3 December 2024 and featured multiple speakers, including:
- Professor Shirley Congdon, Vice-Chancellor at the University of Bradford
- Professor David Phoenix, Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive at London South Bank University
- John Blake, Director for Fair Access and Participation at Office for Students
- Professor Lee Elliot Major, Professor of Social Mobility at the University of Exeter
The event featured the presentation of index results, the panel’s thoughts on the social mobility index, and a Q&A session. You can access the webinar here.
