YU responds to new report on the future demand for higher education

Responding today to the publication by the Higher Education Policy Institute (HEPI) of a new report into the future demand for higher education (HE), Executive Director of Yorkshire Universities, Dr Peter O’Brien, said:

“This report by HEPI is another valuable contribution to the debate around the future size, shape and role of HE in the UK. In particular, I welcome the analysis in the report on the regional landscape of HE, where future demand, although geographically uneven, nevertheless forecasts an increase in all regions. We need to better understand more about the potential impact of these projections for regions, institutions, the wider educational system and young people. An inclusive and sustainable model of HE is key to successful local and regional development – underpinned by a diverse range of higher and further education institutions (including universities and colleges of different types), working closely together, and with local communities and businesses. This way, there is a much stronger prospect of encouraging and enabling more people to learn and acquire the skills to realise their potential, and to achieve societal and economic recovery and a zero carbon future in regions, such as Yorkshire.”
