Priorities for the Hull and East Yorkshire Mayoral Election Candidates

Yorkshire Universities’ (YU) has issued an open letter to Hull and East Yorkshire mayoral election candidates, outlining three key strategic priorities.

YU is committed to driving the economic and social prosperity of Yorkshire through harnessing the collective contribution of the twelve higher education institutes (HEIs) it represents. YU works closely with the region’s local authorities and Mayoral Combined Authorities (MCAs) in areas of shared interest. As Hull and East Yorkshire looks to harness the opportunities that will be presented by devolution, the University of Hull, a valuable member of YU, is well placed to work with the new Mayor and MCA to play a pivotal role in helping to create local growth, jobs and development.

Ahead of mayoral elections on 1 May 2025, Hull and East Yorkshire mayoral candidates are urged to recognise the vital role that HEIs play in the region’s success and the benefits of working together to drive future growth. In Hull and East Yorkshire, the University of Hull is a key anchor institution, making significant economic and civic contributions to the region.

The letter focuses on three main priorities:

  1. Improving productivity and skills and training.
  2. Building a sustainable and prosperous future for our communities.
  3. Championing Hull and East Yorkshire as a place primed for new investment, and a region to do business.

YU encourages the successful candidate to support these three strategic priorities.
