Working with new mayoral leadership

With the election of Luke Campbell as Mayor of Hull and East Yorkshire, Yorkshire Universities (YU) looks ahead to the collaborative opportunities with the Hull and East Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (MCA) to support regional development and local growth.

The election of Luke Campbell means that there is now full coverage of Mayors and MCAs in Yorkshire. This is a pivotal moment, and it presents a valuable opportunity, across the region, to harness the benefits of devolution. We would encourage the new Hull and East Yorkshire Mayor to work closely with his counterparts in York and North Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, and West Yorkshire, on areas of shared interest, including making the collective case for Yorkshire, nationally and internationally.

In an open letter, published ahead of the election, YU encouraged all Mayoral candidates standing in Hull and East Yorkshire to support three strategic priorities:

  1. Improving productivity, skills and training.
  2. Building a sustainable and prosperous future for local communities.
  3. Championing Hull and East Yorkshire as a place primed for new investment, and a region to do business.

Speaking following the election, Dr Peter O’Brien, YU Executive Director, said:

“We would encourage Mayor Luke Campbell to support and harness the vital role that the higher education sector plays in Hull and East Yorkshire, and in the wider region’s success, helping to drive growth, investment, and widening opportunities. YU looks forward to supporting our colleagues at the University of Hull, in working with the new Mayor and MCA, on the strategic economic priorities that matter to Hull and East Yorkshire.”
